What it means
The chart compares how loud several things are: concert speakers, fireworks, gunfire, a blue whale’s call and a space shuttle launch. Each bar is longer than the last. Below them all sits one more, the longest on the chart, with no label.
That’s the joke: something small and ordinary that, at exactly the wrong moment, feels like the loudest noise on the planet. It’s not the real volume, it’s how it feels: a crinkly bag in the cinema, a phone buzzing during an exam, a door creaking when you sneak home late.
Where it comes from
It’s a variant of “decibel level charts”, a format that started circulating on Reddit in 2016: serious-looking noise charts that end with an absurd sound as the loudest of all. This version, with a blank last bar, became a template on meme generators and spread from there to social media and group chats.
How to use it well
- One sound, not a long story. “Opening a bag of chips in the cinema” works; a three-line explanation doesn’t.
- Context is everything. What’s funny is the moment: in silence, at night, in class, in a meeting.
- Silences count too. “The silence after telling a joke” is a classic of the format.
- Keep it to one line. The bar is wide but short: go past about 40 characters and the text shrinks.
More ideas for your group
- A lighter click at your parents’ house
- My stomach on a video call
- My keys when I’m trying not to wake anyone
- “I’m listening” while still muted
- The group chat after “can anyone lend me money?”

FAQ
What goes in the last bar?
An everyday sound that feels deafening in the right moment: a wrapper in a library, a notification in a meeting, your stomach during an exam. Awkward silences work too.
Can I change the other bars?
Not in this template: they're part of the image and set up the joke. Only the last bar is editable, which is the one that matters.
Is the template free?
Yes. Type your caption in the maker on this page and download the PNG for free, no account needed, with the MemeCoop watermark.
