What it means
Cortisol is the hormone your body releases under stress. The internet turned it into a unit for measuring how overwhelmed you are: if something “spikes your cortisol”, it makes you tense; if it “lowers your cortisol”, it calms you down. The meme takes that literally with two gauges, like the ones on a car dashboard: one needle in the red, one in the green.
The joke lives in the contrast. It works best when both situations are nearly identical and only one detail changes: the same text with one different word, the same time on a different day, the same plan with different people.
Where it comes from
Joking about raising or lowering your cortisol started circulating on X in early 2025 and went viral that same year on TikTok, where creators laid a cortisol meter over videos to show whether something was stressful or soothing. This two-gauge still image grew out of that, and it’s much easier to use in a group chat.
One caveat: it’s a meme, not health advice. Low cortisol isn’t a medical goal; in the meme it just means “chill”.
How to use it well
- Left is stress, right is calm. The left needle points to high and the right one to low. Don’t swap them.
- Keep captions short. Three or four words per gauge. If you need a full sentence, it’s probably a different meme.
- Change just one detail. “Your boss texts you at 10 pm” vs. “your boss texts you: take the day off”.
- Pick situations the whole group knows. The more specific and shared, the bigger the laugh. A cortisol meme about something only you live through is just an anecdote.

FAQ
What does “cortisol spike” mean in a meme?
That something stresses you out or makes you tense. It's an exaggeration that treats everyday stress as a measurable chemical reaction. “Lowering your cortisol” is the opposite: something that calms you down.
Which meter goes with which caption?
The left meter's needle points to high, so it gets what stresses you. The right one points to low, so it gets what relaxes you. Swap them and the joke stops making sense.
Can I use this template for free?
Yes. The maker on this page is free and needs no account: type your captions and download the PNG, with the same watermark the MemeCoop app adds.
